OK Google, tell me the news. That’s how I used to start my day. Before I even got out of bed. The Google assistant would then give me quick hits of news from CBC, CNN and the BBC World Service.

As a communicator, it seemed to make sense. I needed to know if there was anything going on in the world that I had to be aware of so I could get a jump on my day. Last summer I realized that I was giving the news way too much power over my mood. It was setting the “tone” for my day.

Since then I have a new routine. It takes a few minutes that lets me set the tone for the day. I set my intention for the day. It’s really quite simple, but so impactful.

Stretch. I start by stretching out my arms and legs and vocalize while I do it. What a release and way to welcome the new day.

Make The Bed. As retired US Naval Admiral William McRaven said, “you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another.”

Take Your Seat. Just like getting ready for meditation, get into a comfortable posture with a good connection between you and the cushion or cushion.

Take Five Deep Breaths. Take five deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth to settle yourself. With each breath settle a little deeper. One the last breath close your eyes and then return to regular breathing.

Ask Yourself Some Questions. Here is your opportunity to ask yourself some questions about the day. They don’t have to be difficult, just stimulate your curiosity. They can as easy as:

  • What is my intention for today?
  • How am I going to show up?
  • How am I going to have the best impact?
  • How will I respond to difficult moments?
  • What will I do differently?
  • What do I need to do to take care of myself?

Set your intention for the day. And write it in your journal to make the commitment.

I will feel great about today if:

  • I am kind to myself.
  • I am patient with others.
  • I practice self care.
  • I respond, rather than reacting.
  • I stay grounded.
  • I eat well.
  • I have fun.

Check in throughout the day. Take a temperature check throughout the day. How are you living your intention. Be kind to yourself if things aren’t going to plan. Remember, every moment is an opportunity to reset and refocus on your intention.
